HIS 276 Midterm Reflection

Kennedy St. Pierre

HIS 276

20 October, 2023

Throughout the first semester of this course, we learned about many topics including Aristotle and his theories about natural and violent motions. We learned about his theories of the four elements (fire, earth, water, and air) and their heaviness or lightness in relation to each other and the “center of the universe”. We learned about Astronomy vs. Astrology and how astronomy is the study of the stars whereas astrology is the study of the horoscopes. We learned about the theory that we are in a cave, and we can’t trust our senses, they are merely a shadow of what reality really is. We learned about the medical aspects discovered during this time, such as the Chinese health system and the discovery of blood flow in the human body.

This content that we learned is relevant to me because we need the discovery of blood flow to discover more things in the medical field like blood types, blood donations, and surgeries. The astrology research created horoscopes we still use today, and I occasionally look at what my horoscope is. The theory of “heaviness” and “lightness” is similar to gravity, so it’s easier to think about.

So far, this course has offered many different ways to test my knowledge and I have thoroughly enjoyed the different methods. By taking notes on the readings and the discussions I am held accountable for doing the work which is a great help as a student to make sure I don’t slack off. Taking quizzes helps see how much information has been retained. Writing and correcting essays see how much information you really learned so far and make sure that it is accurate and how you and other people can improve. I think I have done a good job with each of these. I think I have done a good job contributing to class discussions as a whole and as individual groups. These discussions will help me feel more confident confiding or talking in groups in other classes or in future real-life situations.
